Today I launched my Kickstarter project for my East Campus Collection!
My project is to produce a book of my East Campus photographs as a
collection. I hope to raise enough money to print 25 books and several
original prints for my own photography event in Kalamazoo, MI.
I have 21 days to raise $700. That money will go toward printing costs for the books and photographs, shipping and handling costs, and the cost of incentives for my backers. If I raise more than that, then I can print more copies of the book and other items for my event! BUT if I don't meet my goal in 21 days, then I don't receive any of the pledges and the project comes to a halt.
East Campus holds a dear spot in my heart, as I know it does with many others in the community. I would really love to see this project come to life, so please spread the word!

Busy Bee!
So, I'll address that elephant in the room...
...it's been awhile.
I promise though, I have been keeping busy! Since I have last blogged, I was officially published in Asylum Lake's Summer Anthology! As you know from previous posts, I was very excited about my collaboration with Jesse and now I'm even more excited that it is in print AND I can finally talk about it! I have 3 photographs in the issue, all of which were taken in England. Jesse had been working on a poem that happened to match up perfectly with one of my photos, "Carousel Fare", so we paired them up together. Then I told Jesse the stories behind my "Sea Shell Man" photograph and that inspired him to write a poem based off of that picture. That worked out so well that he did it again for "London Bridge". I had a vision for a layout and was dead-set on making it work out. I was going for a vintage/nostalgic/drifting away tone, so I began making our background. I crumpled up paper and stained it over and over again with coffee until it had the look that I wanted. I took pictures of the paper and began fiddling around with a layout in In-Design. I also searched to find the perfect typewriter fonts for our titles and Jesse's poems. Eventually I pieced it all together and with that, we had our six page layout (we are first in the issue too!). The last thing we had to do was write a short bio for ourselves. Jesse hates writing mini bios but I was determined that ours would be cute and funny. I worked on it for a bit and then had Jesse help me, and he even loved it in the end. You will have to look at an issue to see what it says, but the idea stemmed from how we use our fingers with our crafts and combined that thought with a song that Jesse wrote about us years ago. ANYWAY, I am so excited to be a part of the Summer Anthology and I've been telling everyone about it. Go check it out! There is some awesome stuff in there! You can find it at Michigan News Agency, People's Food Co-op, and Fourth Coast Cafe.
I have also been a busy bee taking photographs and editing them. I have focused a lot on the East Campus photos and I am trying to set up a Kickstarter account to raise funds for my project. I want to make a book of my collection and print 25 copies to have at a book release. I also want some other prints for display and I want to make an event out of it with refreshments and other do-dads. I will keep you posted on when that begins!
Since I've last been on, I have gone on a camping trip in Indiana for 10 days and visited my best friend, Katlin, in New York for about a week. So that is also why you haven't heard from me...I've been traveling without a computer. But don't worry, I've been taking pictures of my adventures and I will be posting some of those very soon =)
Oh! And I forgot to mention that I made my first photography sale through Etsy, so that is SUPER exciting. I logged on today to see that I had some wonderful feedback that made me smile =)
I'm trying to think of what else...
-Published in Asylum Lake with Jesse
-Taking/editing photos
-East Campus and keeping you posted on the Kickstarter
-Traveling to IN and NY (I will also be in MN for several days soon)
-Etsy Sale
Well I think that is it for now. I'm still waiting to see if any photographs will be published in Hear, Here or for the Study Abroad Contest. I'm trying to possibly have another Art Hop and I'm waiting to hear back about being on display at Crow's Nest, or having stuff for sale at Nature Connection. And of course, I am always working on printing more goods for my Etsy shop.
Stay tuned!

There's Not Enough Coffee in the Coffee Pot for Me
I'm in that transition phase of Post-Graduation-Pre-Career and let me tell you, it has its ups and downs.
One big down is that I'm not getting hours at work and that has a lot to do with corporate cutting hours for the summer. My paychecks are pretty much non-existent at this point and that makes it really difficult to save up for big girl things like a car, moving, and paying off student loans. Looking at the positive to this negative though, it was a huge motivator for me to spend some major time on my portfolio/website and research big girl jobs. However there are only so many hours in the past two days that I can do this. As I am starring at my computer screen for the second shift of 8 hours at Starbucks, I realize that my brain is on overload and I am melting into my seat, morphing into a coffee zombie. I decided that I need a break, hence this post. You may not think so but it is hard to lay out everything that is impressive about myself and think only about me for millions of hours. I can only hope that the end product will be a success.
(Keep your fingers crossed!)
Back to positives though...that is one thing I am grateful for on this Thankful Thursday...motivation and time!
My list of companies that I want to apply to is growing! It is so overwhelming. I'm spending so much time researching companies and finding campaigns that I love and what I can highlight from my experiences that could get me hired.
Another thing that keeps motivating me is my friend, Meg Craig. She also nerds out and appreciates great marketing like I do. So when my career search has been enough for my brain to explode, she reminds me how much I love the field and why I will be great doing it. After talking with her I get excited all over again and then I dive back into the process. With that, here is a shout-out to you, Megan!
I also love to have a million things on my plate. For instance, I want to draw sketches for my printmaking class, work on photography, and start my career. I don't want to sacrifice anything right now and with that I have Jesse serving me endless amounts of coffee. Back to me morphing into a coffee zombie... ;)
On a photography note, I am entering several photographs from London into the Study Abroad Photo Contest. There are four categories: Places, People, Food, and Students Abroad. I think I have decided on the photos for Places and People, but I have two for food and I can't decide. One is of an English Breakfast and the other is of a curry dish (curry is their national dish). It's a toss up! Take a look and let me know if you have any opinions...

Hot in Cleveland!
I had a bit of an impromptu mini vacation to Cleveland for the holiday. While I was there, I managed to convince my family to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, which was awesome. When I was last there in 2009, no one was allowed to take pictures so I assumed those rules still applied and I left my camera at the hotel. Apparently, things change. I didn't get any great photos because I only had my phone, but I must say that having some pictures is way better than none!
We also went to the Cleveland Zoo! That zoo is amazing! Not only do they have so many animals, but the exhibits are fabulous, unique, and fun, the animals are happy and roaming around, AND visitors actually get to view the animals while the animals are enjoying life. You don't have to sacrifice anything at this zoo. I managed to capture some great shots while I was there! Check them out!
There are more photographs from the zoo and other snapshots on my Facebook page:

In other news, I have also turned a few photographs into postcards and those are for sale now on Etsy! Check them out along with other photographs:

Three Owls Update #2
My dear friend V, er Veronica, was the second to finish her postcard! She did some awesome work, adding color, humor, and some additional drawings! I don't know about the rest of you, but I definitely laughed when I saw her alterations! Check it out!
It is pretty much adorable and awesome. I love the bat suit especially! Fabulous work, Veronica!
Whoooo's next!?!? I can't wait to see!

Wesley the Owl
I recently read the best book ever. Do you want to read the best book ever too? All of the cool kids are doing it, I swear. Well, at least I am and I'm all the cool you need, right?! Okay, maybe not but still, you should read this.
It's Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien.
This book is SO COOL. It's an autobiography/biography on a girl and her owl. There are funny stories and interesting owl behavior stories. It is great for reading about love or communication, or just because you love owls like me! There are some scientific things (it's easy reading, I promise) and best of all it's about my favorite, BARN OWLS!
I fell in love, 100% in love, with this owl and story. I want more books like this one! Who knows of any?! You better tell me if you do!
Anyway, here is the point that I am getting at (other than this is the best book ever and you should read it). The point is that I decided to donate a portion of my sales (10%) to WWF for endangered species and possibly to owl rehabilitation centers.
I feel really good about this decision and I hope everyone that purchases something from my shop, or supports my work, does too!

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day
It's been stormy the past couple of days (my neighbor's house was struck by lightning and caught on fire! No worries, everyone is safe.) and today has been rainy and dreary. But gosh darn it if the sun hasn't been peeking through the overcast sky and a few clouds. Now "My Girl" is playing as I claim my corner at Starbucks. It all seems very fitting.
I'm watching Jesse run a meeting right now, since he has been officially promoted to a Shift Leader. I must say I am trying really hard to not laugh or stare and smile at the table of people. So, I am focusing on this lovely post. That's right, you guys are my distraction. Sorry if you feel cheated right now; I promise to say something interesting...hopefully.
I've been working on setting up another Etsy shop for my other hobbies. I don't really want to say too much right now because I want to gush about it when it is all official and open. I can tell you that I thought of a perfect name for my shop/line of goodies. I would like to call it a "trifecta" of sorts but I'm not betting on any horses. Maybe a "triple threat" would be more appropriate, but I'm not threatening anyone. Well, you can at least be certain that it combines three things that I LOVE. More to come on that, I promise. I'm just itching to tell everyone!
Next on my agenda is my playground project. As I mentioned before, I want to photograph some old (and I suppose new, if it catches my fancy) playground equipment as my next project. It would be perfect lighting right now if it would just pause on the sprinkling/rain for a hot minute so that my camera could go outside. I also HAVE to photograph East Campus before it exists no longer. I remember going in East Hall back in my Freshman year of college (ehm, seven years ago...) and exploring it, taking tons of photos on my junkie point-and-shoot. And for so many years, Jesse and I would go see the sunrise on Easter and other select mornings at East Hall. It will be a shame the day that it is gone, so I must photograph it while I can.
Tonight is my class at the KIA, so I must get my creative juices flowing! While you are all waiting on me to start powering through my projects, check out my other sites!

Three Owls on a Branch Update #1
As a recap, the other day I mailed out 7 postcards of three owls sitting on a branch. This sketch later ending up being my first linocut, but that's talked about in a different post! Anyway, I drew the same image on 7 postcards and mailed them out to 7 people from AMP's Facebook page, with two exceptions. The idea is to add or alter the postcard and then mail it to someone else to repeat! Read here for more details.
I'm so excited to see the different things that people do and who will be reached! These postcards were mailed to:
Megan Craig
Joshua Dease
Ashley Duke
Hannah Duke
Veronica Garcia
Sara Pezzoni
Josh Tabbia
I wanted to have a variety of guys and gals and to spread the postcards out across the USA. So that is 5 gals and 2 guys in 7 seven states (MI, IL, MN, GA, TN, FL, NC). I know that these people have very different art styles and I think that these people will join in and keep the experiment going! There is one person on the list that I don't even know, so he must have had an interesting surprise when he opened the mailbox!
Anyway, today I looked online and found the first submission! I was soooooooo excited! My dear friend from studying abroad in London last year, Sara Pezzoni, uploaded her postcard and boy is it rad!!!
Check it out!
Sara added color, a wing, a sky, and some copy! I'm pretty excited about this; it looks sweet! I love the colors and that shooting star especially, but really I love it all! Thank you Sara for breaking the ice and working on this project so soon! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one excited hahaha! It looks fantastic, lady!
Whoooo will be next?! Keep them coming guys!
(Here is one of the original postcards if you want to compare!)

Relief Printing and Linocuts
As I mentioned before, I started my Printmaking class at the KIA! Our first project is working with linoleum, creating print matrices. Relief print is the earliest form of printmaking and I was pumped to get started last week to learn how to do it. I have been having a ton of fun working on some sketches and etching some of my matrices at home. You can do relief printing with linoleum (linocut) or wood (woodcut). Linoleum is more fluid and smoother than wood, which is grainy.
Linocut tools (can be purchased at Hobby Lobby for $10 to get started)
Sketchbook/source material
Drawing materials (pencils, pens, Sharpie, drawing pens)
Paper (Rives BFK highly recommended)
Brayer
Spatula
Wooden spoon/press (hand printing vs machine)
Newsprint
Simply Green (for cleaning matrix)
I went to Hobby Lobby to purchase linoleum and linocut tools. The linoleum was $6.99 and the tools were $9.99, but if you know anything about Hobby Lobby, you know to look up their 40% off coupon before you checkout!
Later, at home, I cut my piece of linoleum in half so that I can make two designs. I would highly recommend this if you are 1) just learning how to do this or 2) have a lot of ideas for designs. If you are just learning how to do this, this gives you the freedom to play around with the different tools and get a feel for it. Plus, if you mess up or don't like what you are making, you have that extra half!

| This is what the ink will pick up on my matrix. |
So I have done both forms and I feel that each works for me but in different situations.
ADVICE
1) Play around with the different tools. They all work great for different things but you won't know unless you starting playing around.
2) Cross-hatch for shading or shadows.
3) Cut up and away from you. Have a station or table set up to work at and always keep your free hand below your tool so that you don't cut yourself.
4) Have fun and free style! I only sketched ideas and then I altered them with my tools as I went along.
Printing
First, if you want to have your image centered on your paper, you must register it. You are basically make a template on some cheap paper. Put your matrix on the register paper and trace it. Then measure your printing paper and figure out how much room you need for margins. Then take the ruler to your register paper and draw the lines for your printing paper. Set your register paper and printing paper aside once you are finished.
For printing on linoleum, you can use water- or oil-based ink. Water-based is a little easier to clean up, however. I have been working on a glass table, but you might have a different set up. First you squeeze out some ink onto the glass. Then you use a flat spatula to warm it up (needed for oil-based but optional for water-based, though it does help to make sure there are no chunks). Then take your flat spatula and in a different spot, spread out a line of ink. Use your brayer to roll out the ink into a square or rectangle. Keep rolling until it looks nice and velvety. Once it looks velvety, do slow rolls onto your matrix (super fast rolls will pick up ink, while slower rolls lay it down). I spin my matrix to keep my rolls even and to cover the entire surface. You want to keep doing this until your matrix has the same velvety look.
For hand-printing, you will lay down your register paper on a clean surface. Then place your matrix on your template, face up, and then place your paper on the template. It is helpful to take a wax piece of paper and lay it across the top. This way your paper won't move and smudge while you are rubbing. Then take your wooden spoon and start rubbing your spoon around and around. It takes awhile and requires some arm muscle (it's a great workout!) but it works well for working at home without a $500+ printing press machine. You can peel up a corner to check on your progress. If it is still spotty, then keep working! Either it needs more pressing or there wasn't enough ink. A good way to test that, is to work in one area for awhile and see if it fills in.
For using a printing press, you will use the same process for the most part. You will lay down your template, your matrix, and then your printing paper. You will lay down the two large pieces of felt and then crank it through once you check the pressure (we set ours at 3 and 9). Once you start cranking, keep an even pace and don't stop halfway through! Once it comes through, the first thing you will check for is the embossment. Then, if it is there, you can lift up your print!
Hopefully you will have the lines from where you carved come through too! That is exciting because that screams relief print and really makes it authentic. You can see mine on my crazy guy below =)
Now play around and have some fun!!!
Oh and PS, clean your matrices when you are finished. Dab off some ink with newsprint and then clean the rest with Simply Green. Also, you can do rubbings with your newsprint and a crayon to see how your design looks before you print!

5 Art Things to Be Thankful For
How did Thursday sneak up on me so fast?!
Well a lot has happened in this past week, so I have a lot to share (I'll try to keep it short!). It's been an artsy week for me so this post is all about art!
1. Art Hop
I must start with the mention of Art Hop. As you know from previous posts, June Art Hop was this past Friday and it was faaaaantastic. If you haven't already, read more about that here! Seeing different expressions and displays of art really got my gears rolling. Being in the sunshine with some wine was also another plus ;)
2. Stencils
I also started working on some Alfred Hitchcock stencils for a friend's birthday present and they turned out beautifully for my first attempt at stencils. Jesse and I painted some canvas the other night and today we spray painted the stencils on. I love doing art projects outside, especially with my favorite man ;) I began to get a little experimental with the backgrounds and then I went a little stencil mad. Needless to say I got some good work done today! (I'm a little reluctant to post a picture in case my friend reads this before we give him his present, but I will anyway. Casey, if you are reading this, act surprised!)
3. Guerilla Postcards
I had an idea from my guerilla art book (the one from this post) to make some original postcards and mail them out to some friends for an experiment. Basically, the recipients can alter/add to the postcard and then mail it to someone else, then that person does the same thing, and so on. You can read more about it here =) I thought it would be a fun experiment to see how each postcard changes from the original with the influence of other art styles. Plus, it is a fun way to create some buzz, reach people that I wouldn't be able to otherwise, and get connected with others in the US.
(Side note- anytime I think or read guerilla lately, I think of the Magilla Gorilla music video "I've Got a Gorilla for Sale".)
4. Printmaking
OH MY GOODNESS! I started my class at the KIA last night and I fell completely in love. I was so excited and eager to get to work. Our first project is relief printing using linoleum as our matrix. I brought my sketch book and some ideas with me but the drawing I used for the postcards above was still fresh on my mind. We were supposed to just play around with tools and get a feel for the equipment, so I did just that. I was pretty proud of my first print! And it was hand pressed...
(That means I had to use my arm muscles.)
5. Photography
I started playing around with my Nikon D7000 this week and I am anxious to start some serious shooting. I played around with it the other day but I'm itching for some full on extravaganzas! I think my first opportunity will be my sister with her dance recital outfit. Muhahaha ;)
For now, meet Cougar.
Art is consuming me! I have so many ideas and so many things to work on! I also want to share how I make some of my projects, with you, my fellow blog readers! Much to do, much to do! One last thing before I sign off...I have to mention how wonderful it is to have Jesse around me and my art nonsense. He is very encouraging and he truly gets excited and is amazed at what I create. Sometimes I think he is pulling my leg, but he is very proud of me and I can see it on his face. I LOVE to see that on his face =) He might have to fight with my sister for my number 1 fan spot!
Later Gators!
xoxo
PS I thought I posted this, but I hit the wrong button and only saved it! Now it's technically Friday! Does it still count as a Thankful Thursday, since I haven't gone to sleep yet? I think so...
Well a lot has happened in this past week, so I have a lot to share (I'll try to keep it short!). It's been an artsy week for me so this post is all about art!

Three Owls on a Branch
Something exciting is about to happen!
Well, at least, I think it is exciting and I hope you will too!
Some of my followers on Facebook have been selected and will soon receive three little owls in the mail. Okay, they aren't alive or anything, I drew them on a postcard, but still, they are cute and they will soon be flying into your mailbox.
Here is what is going on...I'll break it down for you.
There are a handful of hand-drawn postcards by me, Ashlee Marie, floating around at the post office, on their way to homes across the USA. If you receive a postcard, your job is to add/alter it in some way. You can do whatever you want; it's up to you! You can color, draw, write, paste...ANYTHING! Once you have left your mark, take a picture and post it on the Facebook page, then mail it to someone else!
It is as easy as that and fun too! I can't wait to see what people do to the postcards and see how they change over time.
Let the alterations begin!
P.S. Please sign the back of the postcard too!

Nikon D7000
Today, I charged my battery and did some light manual reading. Yes, I'm finally converting from my D40 to my D7000 and boy, is it a beautiful world! I feel like I went from a flip phone to a smartphone; I feel so fancy. Needless to say, I operated my self-timer and harassed my dogs for a little bit. I was pretty eager to get started! Here is a sample of my silliness.
I call this series, "Dog Yawn".
This is me, Ashlee Marie.
My sister has no idea what she is in for when she gets home....
Stay tuned, there will be more to come.
